Tunisian culture has been inspired by many countries, including France, Spain, Italy, Turkey, and the Roman Empire. Islam is the predominant religion. Arabic is the official language. The legal system is based on the French civil code and sharia law, with legislative acts subject to judicial review. A parliamentary republic is the government type. Every five years, presidential elections are held, with the president being elected directly by the people.

There are eight UNESCO world heritage sites in the country.
