Thailand does not yet have a digital nomad visa as of 2023. Work permits are required for all types of work undertaken on Thailand. Because remote work visas are not yet available in Thailand, overseas freelancers and self-employed individuals are not permitted to work there.
Thailand is one of the most popular countries in Southeast Asia for many digital nomads. In comparison to other Southeast Asian countries, Thailand does provides a variety of visa options for remote workers, digital nomads, and location-independent entrepreneurs.

Why is Thailand so popular among expats and digital nomads?
Security: Thailand is an extremely safe country. You never hear about anyone having their property stolen; instead, you only hear about people having their property restored (and we all know that there aren’t many countries like that in the world!). Thailand Digital Nomad Visa Options Right Now
Foreigners who want to work in Thailand must first obtain a Thai work permit. Thailand’s digital nomad visa is still not active, so if you are determined to work and live in Thailand, you should examine the following Thai visas:
Thai Tourist Visa Exemption Scheme for 30 Days
(45 Days for Arrivals Between 1/10/22 and 31/03/23)

- Costs: none
- Requirements: a valid passport from one of the countries in the link above.
- Maximum stay: 30 days – This has been expanded to 45 days for visitors coming between October 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023.
- Can be used three times in six months by flight and twice a year for overland or sea crossing.
- You must have a confirmed outbound flight.
- You are not permitted to work, yet distant work is tough to monitor.
Visa on arrival for 15 days (30 days for arrivals between 1/10/22 and 31/03/23)
Thailand offers Visa on arrival to 18 countries; a full list of countries and the process can be found here. It should be noted that these are nations that are not visa exempt but can apply for visas on arrival.
- Price: 2,000 Baht
- Duration: 15 days – This has been raised to 45 days for visitors coming between October 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023.
- You must have a confirmed outbound flight.
- You are not permitted to work, yet remote workers are tough to monitor.
Thailand Tourist Visa (single entry and multiple entry visa)
- The price is 2,000 Baht.
- Duration of validity: 3 months for a single entry visa, 6 months for multiple entry visas.
- The maximum stay is 60 days.
- Extension: 30 days at the discretion of the immigration officer, with a maximum stay of 90 days. What is unclear is if the 15-day extension granted to visa-exempt and e-visa holders will also apply here, resulting in a 45-day extended stay for a total stay of 105 days. - If you have used up your 60 or 90 days (with extension), you can reapply by conducting a visa run.
- You are not permitted to work, yet digital nomads are tough to monitor.
The Special Tourist Visa 2023
The Special Tourist Visa was implemented on October 1, 2020, to allow for longer stays in order to mitigate the fall in tourism caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
This visa program was supposed to terminate on September 30, 2021, however it has already been extended until March 31, 2023. The visa is valid for 90 days and can be extended twice for a total of 270 days, but not beyond March 31, 2023.
The Special Tourist Visa is difficult to obtain due to the numerous requirements, but if you achieve them, you can stay for up to 270 days without having to perform any visa runs.
- Price: 70 euros
- Validity period: 90 days
- Extension: A stay of 90 days can be extended twice for a total of 270 days, including the quarantine period.
- You are not permitted to work for a living in Thailand; nevertheless, remote labor is difficult to monitor and enforce.
- For COVID-19, you must have health insurance that covers medical expenses in Thailand and has a minimum coverage of $100,000 USD.
- You must have Thai health insurance that covers your whole stay in Thailand, with no less than 40,000 THB coverage for outpatient treatment and 400,000 THB coverage for inpatient treatment.
- A round-trip flight reservation has been confirmed.
- A certified medical certificate demonstrating that there are no preventable diseases is required.
- A Certificate of Good Conduct that has been certified
- Certified English extract from the population registry • Proof of payment for lodging for the entire expected stay • Proof of payment of AQ / SHA+ hotel
Problems with Special Tourist Visas
The issue with the Special Tourist Visa is that, beginning of July 1, 2022, there is no longer a 5-day quarantine requirement for non-Covid-19 vaccinated travellers, nor is there a requirement to register for the Thailand pass. Thai health insurance was required for Thailand pass registration.
It appears that the removal of admission restrictions happened quickly, and the STV has not kept up with the new circumstances. The STV is still beneficial for individuals who want to stay in Thailand for 270 days, but it comes with a lot of paperwork to fill out.
Thai Work Permit
Obtaining a Thai work visa is the simplest and most secure way to begin working in the local economy in Thailand. This visa and work permit is valid for one year and can simply be renewed before it expires.
This visa allows you to legally enter the Thai labor market because the work visa is accompanied by a work permit, which you can receive when a Thai employer applies for one on your behalf. The most important prerequisite for anyone wishing to work in Thailand is to obtain a work permit.
Thailand SMART Visa
The Thailand SMART visa is ideal for qualified workers looking to enter the Thai labor market. If you are a:

- Dependent of a SMART visa holder,
you may be eligible to become part of the group of primary SMART visa holders.
The SMART visa is valid for a minimum of one year and a maximum of four years, during which time you are exempt from the need for a work permit.
To preserve your SMART visa, you must show proof of a yearly payment of 10,000 Thai Baht. If your SMART visa is due to expire, you can renew it 60 days before it does.
Thailand Elite Visa
The Thai Elite visa, as the name suggests, is a long-stay visa option for individuals who can pay a yearly fee of 600,000 Thai Baht.
Like most digital nomad visas, this visa does not allow you to work in Thailand without a separate Thai work permit, but it does allow you to expand your worldwide business in Thailand, much like a digital nomad visa would.
The Elite visa is good for five years and can be renewed for another year. The Elite visa is available in several packages, the following of which are available:
- Elite Easy Access. Valid for five years with the option to extend.
- Elite Family Excursion. Valid for ten years and for couples who are willing to pay 800,000 Thai Baht.
- Elite Family Alternative. It is valid for ten years after the first five years are renewed for an additional five years and costs 800,000 Thai Baht.
- Elite Privilege Access. It is valid for ten years and costs one million Thai Baht.
- Elite Superiority Extension. It is valid for twenty years and costs one million Thai Baht.
- Elite Ultimate Privilege. The certificate is valid for twenty years and costs 2,140,000 Thai Baht, plus an annual charge of 21,000 Thai Baht.
- Elite Family Premium. Family members of Elite Ultimate Privilege members are eligible.
Visa for Tourists
If you wish to visit Thailand for a short period of time, you can do so with a tourist visa without getting a visa similar to what would be a Thailand digital nomad visa.
Depending on your passport, you may be able to obtain a 30-day visa on arrival. You can see if you qualify for this on the government’s website by clicking here. Visas on arrival or e-visas are usually available to Canadians, Americans, and Europeans.
If you need an e-visa to enter Thailand, simply establish an account on the site above, fill out the necessary forms, upload the necessary documents, pay the visa fee, and wait for it to be processed. Remember to print and save the visa approval in your passport. In some situations, you may be required to visit the Royal Thai Embassy in your country.
Furthermore, if allowed by the immigration officer, you may be eligible to renew for another 30 days.
Thailand Long-Term Residency Visa for Digital Nomads
The Thailand Long-Term Residency Visa is available since September 1st 2022. It is a 10-year visa created by the Thailand Board of Investments https://ltr.boi.go.th/ that incorporates many characteristics from the SMART visa.
The 10-year Thailand LTR visa is intended for rich expats and digital nomads. Attracting these high-quality long-term residents is thought to help propel the Thai economy. The 10-year visa is designed to attract wealthy long-term visitors from four categories:
- Digital Nomads – Since most digital nomads now use tourist visas with the lack of a real Thailand digital nomad visa, it is not likely that the 10-year LTR visa will appeal to many of them.
- Highly qualified professionals who can advance Thailand through their abilities and salary spending. This is in competition with the current SMART Visa.
- Wealthy Global Citizens – The Thailand Elite Visa already caters to them.
- Wealthy Seniors – Thailand is a retirement paradise, and it already offers Non-Immigrant O-A and O-X visas to less wealthy pensioners over the age of 50. The advantage here is ten years of peace of mind and reporting rights for LTR visa holders.
