The passport

A G20 passport, with Antarctica on the map

Argentina prints its bicontinental map inside every passport, mainland and Antarctic sector together. What matters more is what the document does for you.

  • 160+ destinations visa-free or visa on arrival, including the Schengen area, the United Kingdom, Japan and most of Latin America and Asia.
  • Mercosur residence rights. Live and work across Mercosur member and associate states, from Brazil and Uruguay to Chile and Colombia.
  • Dual nationality allowed. You keep your current passport. Argentina never asks naturalized citizens to renounce.
  • E-2 treaty country. Argentine citizens can apply for the US E-2 investor visa, a route closed to many nationalities.
  • No residence clock. Under Decree 524/2025 the investment route has no minimum time living in Argentina.

What we know so far

The facts, separated from the rumours

Most pages about this program mix the decree with guesswork. Here is what is written in law, what the government announced on October 2, 2026, and what is still open. We update this as the regulations are published.

In the decree

A citizenship route for investors exists

Decree 524/2025 (July 2025) amended the nationality rules so that foreigners who make a "relevant investment" in Argentina can apply for citizenship, whatever the time of their residence in the country.

A dedicated agency runs it

The Agencia de Programas de Ciudadanía por Inversión, under the Ministry of Economy, screens applicants and certifies the investment. The Ministry decides which investments count as relevant.

A 30 business day decision

Once the agency issues its report, the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones has 30 business days to grant or refuse citizenship. Due diligence involves migration, security and financial intelligence bodies.

US$350,000 contribution or US$800,000 bond

Two routes: a direct, non-refundable contribution of US$350,000 to the National Treasury, or subscribing a US$800,000 government bond created for the program. All funds must move through the formal financial system and meet anti-money-laundering standards. Government and professional fees have not been published.

Applications open in Q4 2026

The government says the program will be ready to receive applications during the fourth quarter of 2026. The agency evaluates each file with the intelligence service (SIDE), the financial intelligence unit (UIF) and the Security and Interior ministries, then sends its recommendation to Migraciones, which approves or rejects.

In the law

No worldwide tax by default

Ley 27.802 (March 2026) amended the income tax law: citizenship obtained through a relevant investment does not, by itself, make you an Argentine tax resident. For the residency tests you are treated as a foreign national, so tax residency only follows permanent residence or twelve months in the country on temporary permits. If you never move here you are taxed like any non-resident, on Argentine-source income only. Anyone who was already a permanent resident when naturalized stays tax resident.

Family: US$100,000 per spouse or adult child, US$25,000 per minor

A spouse, and children aged 18 to 25 who are single and have no children, can each apply with a US$100,000 contribution to the Treasury. Children under 18: US$25,000 each. The government's own example: a main applicant, spouse and two minor children come to US$500,000 in total.

Still open: the fee schedule, the bond terms and the application forms. We flag them to the list as soon as they are published.

How it is expected to work

Five steps from application to passport

  1. Pre-screeningIdentity, source of funds and background checks with the agency, before any money moves.
  2. Qualifying investmentContribute US$350,000 to the National Treasury or subscribe the US$800,000 program bond. The agency certifies it.
  3. Due diligenceThe agency reviews the file with SIDE, the financial intelligence unit and the Security and Interior ministries.
  4. DecisionMigraciones grants or refuses within 30 business days of the agency's report.
  5. CitizenshipNaturalization, DNI and passport. Argentina allows dual nationality, so you keep your current passport.

This sequence follows Decree 524/2025 and the October 2, 2026 announcement. The implementing regulations will set the exact order, fees and forms. We will update this section the day they are published.

Is this for you

Who the program is designed for

A good fit if you

  • Want a second passport from a G20 country without moving there.
  • Have US$350,000 or more available for a non-refundable contribution (or US$800,000 for the bond route), on top of fees.
  • Value Mercosur residence rights across South America, dual nationality and a passport with 160+ visa-free destinations.
  • Are comparing Argentina with the Caribbean programs, Turkey or a European golden visa.
  • Already invest in Argentina and want the citizenship your capital can now earn.

Probably not the right route if you

  • Plan to live in Argentina anyway. Residency plus two years of residence already leads to citizenship, at a fraction of the cost. See Argentina residency from US$1,500 a month in income.
  • Have an Argentine parent. Citizenship by descent is faster and nearly free.
  • Need an answer this month. Applications open in Q4 2026, and the first passports will take months, not weeks.
  • Expect a guarantee. Every applicant goes through due diligence and the state can refuse.

Who is behind this

Written in Buenos Aires by people who live under these rules

Citizenship Argentina is a project of BowTiedMara, a Buenos Aires based publisher covering Argentina's economy, property market and investment migration for a global audience of investors. We also run SovSpot, a directory of 320+ residency and citizenship programs and 18,000+ immigration attorneys.

We are not the government, not a licensed agent and we do not file applications. We read the Boletín Oficial, work with a licensed Buenos Aires immigration attorney and tell you what it means. That independence is the point of the list.

What we will never do

  • Sell or rent your email address.
  • Promise an outcome. Every application goes through government due diligence.
  • Quote a price or a timeline as fact before the government publishes it.
  • Send more than a few emails a month.

Questions

Argentina citizenship by investment, answered

Is the program open for applications?

Not yet. The government announced the program on October 2, 2026 and says it will be ready to receive applications during the fourth quarter of 2026. Applications run through the Agencia de Programas de Ciudadanía por Inversión, under Decree 524/2025. Waiting list members get the exact opening date, the forms and the fee schedule the day they appear.

How much does Argentine citizenship by investment cost?

The government announced two routes on October 2, 2026: a non-refundable contribution of US$350,000 to the National Treasury, or a US$800,000 government bond created for the program. A spouse or a child aged 18 to 25 adds US$100,000 each and each child under 18 adds US$25,000, so a family of four comes to US$500,000. Government and professional fees have not been published yet.

Do I have to live in Argentina?

No. Decree 524/2025 allows investors to apply for citizenship whatever the length of their residence in Argentina, which is the main difference from the ordinary two-year naturalization route. Some physical presence for biometrics and paperwork is likely.

How long does it take?

Once the agency issues its report, Migraciones has 30 business days to decide. Add time for pre-screening, the investment and the passport itself. A realistic end-to-end estimate is several months, which is still fast by the standards of Caribbean and European programs.

Can I include my spouse and children?

Yes. A spouse, and children aged 18 to 25 who are single and have no children of their own, can apply with a contribution of US$100,000 each. Children under 18 pay US$25,000 each. Each must prove the family relationship.

Does Argentina allow dual citizenship?

Yes. Argentina does not ask naturalized citizens to give up their existing nationality, and Argentine nationality itself cannot be renounced. Check that your current country also allows dual nationality.

How strong is the Argentine passport?

It sits in the top 20 of the Henley Passport Index, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to more than 160 destinations, including the Schengen area, the United Kingdom, Japan and much of Asia. Citizens also hold residence rights across Mercosur member and associate states. Argentina is an E-2 treaty country with the United States, although it is not in the US Visa Waiver Program today.

Will I become an Argentine tax resident?

Not by getting the passport. Ley 27.802 (March 2026) amended article 116 of the income tax law: citizenship by investment does not by itself make you a tax resident, and for the residency tests you are treated as a foreign national. You become tax resident only if you take permanent residence or spend twelve months in Argentina on temporary permits, the same as any foreigner. People who were already permanent residents when naturalized remain tax resident. Non-residents are taxed on Argentine-source income only. Get advice from a cross-border tax adviser before you invest. Nothing on this page is tax or legal advice.

Is this the official government site?

No. Citizenship Argentina is an independent information service run by BowTiedMara. We are not affiliated with the Government of Argentina, the Ministry of Economy or the agency, and we do not process applications. Official information is published at argentina.gob.ar and in the Boletín Oficial.

What happens with my details?

They are stored securely and used to send you program updates. We work with a licensed Buenos Aires immigration attorney, who also receives waiting-list enquiries so he can follow up with you. We never sell or rent your data. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
